The swallows....they leave every year on this day(Oct.23)
not to return till March 19...Do they really stick to the
calendar like that?...It's hard to imagine that an entire population
of animal would all get up n go on the same exact day every
year...interesting...

An old shot of the old mission

I like seasonal posts Shloemoe, it reminds me of the circular nature of the year, halloween, Beltane, birthdays, Crissmuss etc.

The swallows here buggered off to Afrika about a month ago, the trees still have their leaves on, a few sharp frosts and some winds will soon seem strip them to the bare. Arboreal erotica.

Ah the swallows will be back, in March.

Now can you tell me how to get rid of this flock of damn starlings that are nesting in my hair?

Cheerio.

Starlings!....The most numerous bird in OrangeCounty(next to the
sparrows) is The European Starling....Seems(the story goes)
people in New York back in the 1800's wanted more birds in
central park...they imported em.......The bird has conquered
North America.

But I haven't seen many lately...

I like pictures of birds.

Greenfiches, siskins, herons, eagles, puffins, wren's - wrens are so titchy wee. Even male blackbirds with that amazing yellow circle around their eyes.
Sparrowhawks, vultures, buzzards.

Starlings are great imitators Shloemoe, they are very good at mimicry of other birds. They frequently pretended to ve swallows and were much better at it than the swallows. We had a starling nest right outside the front door though, the noise that the baby birds made was incredible, I was glad when they pissed off.

See when they get in flocks, they wheel through the air, like one giant mass of feathered disease bearing beaks.

That's enough birds...

CwA likes birds, even racing pigeons

I grew up in San Juan Capistrano...

They don't all show up on one day in March, and then all leave on the same day in October - though it is pretty funny to see all the tourists, on March 19th, standing in front of the Mission, looking up at the sky - and shrieking every time they see a pigeon.

The swallows have moved inland, to Mission Viejo, for the most part -- people have made it difficult for them to nest on thier houses, because they don't like the mess that they leave.

I used to try to rescue baby swallows when they fell out of their nests. It never worked, but I tried, every time.

this is what happens when they build their nests on your house...

When I was a kid I was a "ranch hand" at the "boys ranch"
above O'neil park(Joplin Boys Ranch)...one spring it was my
duty to follow one of the counselors around and clean up the
nests and dead swallows he would shoot off the bunk house
eaves....I hated it....never made any sense to me cause the
damage(just dirt n droppins) was nuthing compared to the
holes made by the high powered pellet gun used to shoot em
down....no wonder shloemoe has authority issues!

they were something to see in them days...flocks of em darting
around like a school o fishes chasing a meal(bugs)...it was all
country out there then...all tract houses now...no wonder shloemoe
has authority issues....I digress....
