Michael Steele Exits PD Post At Indie 103.1
SHOCKER! ENTRAVISION Uber Alternative KDLD & KDLE (INDIE 103.1)/LOS ANGELES PD MICHAEL STEELE has been let go after a hugely successful three-year run.

While not a major ratings success due to its limited signal, INDIE 103.1 gained national recognition as a leader in breaking new music and causing listeners to buy it and attend client-sponsored events. ROLLING STONE magazine called it "The Coolest Station In America."

Don't expect STEELE to be idle for long. Reach him at SteelinMusic@earthlink.net.

ENTRAVISION/INDIE 103.1 released the following statement to ALL ACCESS, "MICHAEL STEELE is no longer the Programming Director for INDIE 103.1. We will announce a new programming director soon."

While there is officially no word on a replacement, there are 16 tons of rumors that PHOENIX MEDIA Alternative WFNX/BOSTON OM/PD MAX TOLKOFF has the inside on this one.

I remember when Rolling Stone did that article. And like most things in entertainment, Rolling Stone was about six months to a year too late when they reported that story, when Indie was already on the decline.

I just looked at the rating on radio & record and Indie have a 0.5 compared to KROQ's 3.9. (down from 4.3) I wonder what that means in real terms.

If I was in charge I fire everybody...then re-hire everybody I fired..then party.

Then re-hire them for less money and fewer benefits.

Then, with the money saved, buy some wigs so the d.j's look the part for the hair metal.

It's beyond salvage. It ran its course. It was GREAT when it started and for about a year or so afterwards. When it was good, it was very good. Now that it's bad, it's very bad. I seriously doubt anyone could restore Indie to its heyday.

I just read that Indie has named Max Tolkoff from WFNX/Boston as the new program director as of April 1.
He is quoted as saying ""INDIE 103.1 is an Alternative radio station in the truest sense of the word, and I’m excited to keep the station’s adventurous, pioneering programming spirit intact as we seek to expand our listener base."I interpet that as meaning more commercial & generic to appeal to a KROQ size audience. I looked at some WFNX sample hours & it is similar to Indie except it includes more pop/alternative bands like Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Everclear & The Offspring. The end may be close at hand.

Yea, I agree... has gone to shit lately. I only listen to Complete Control because it's the only way to find punk rock and the stuff that nobody ever plays. Other than that, most of the time, the songs are like wtf? And what happened to element radio?! I lied indie when it was techno long long long ago. Complete Control was the next best thing.

I think that 103.1 just needs to do some Feng Shui....its gone through way too many formats in the last decade or so....

103.1 is like that store in the strip mall that is constantly changing owners.... I'm telling you...call in a Feng Shui expert..it just may save them...
