Why Halloran Is Better

Why Halloran Is Better
It seemed like most people on Indie today, even the supposedly sober ones, were kissing the ground on the fact that it is 4/20. We started the morning with some guy who's in a marijuana stage show, another guest who owns a Hemp store in Venice (which actually was cool, in that he attempted to explain how ecologically helpful hemp is, and that you can't smoke it), and on and on. To this minute on TK's show. Let's bow down today to the god of pot.
Well...
Let's just jump to the ALTERNATIVE to that, and why I dig Halloran's shows SO much more.
As his homage to 4/20, he plays this set:
THE SEX PISTOLS Anarchy In The U.K.
PATO BANTON Don't Sniff Coke
A PERFECT CIRCLE The Outsider
THE OFFSPRING The Kids Aren't Alright
TONES ON TAIL Go!
Most especially the Pato Banton, which basically says: don't screw up your life with drugs. And ending with the Tones on Tail song, which says Life is great, all on it's own. You don't need drugs to make you happy.
<<So let's all smash through
Through the fear of being real
Through the fear of really being you
'cause living it up, it's a big deal
It's good for you>>
Rock on, Halloran. Wish Indie didn't go the predictable druggie route.
Cause you know, the truth is: drugs aren't ok, even pot. It's WAY cooler to NOT do drugs. OK, kids?

No Macs
On that, my friend, we shall have to disagree.
The only thing that makes 94.9 worse is that they can't get their shit together enough to let people on Macintoshes listen to them. Otherwise, I'd be listening to them every day.

No Street Team
Well, OK, in that regard, you've got me.
They have no Street Team. They have no Yahoo group. They have no hoo-ha on MySpace.
But, but, but...they have famous people who do their Coup d'Etats. Does that count? And their Coup d'Etats are EVERY Sunday.
Yes, ok, you got me. They need a Street Team.

This is How great it is
OK, this is how much I love Halloran's show. I am unable to get it on the radio (it is San Diego, after all, and that's FAR away). There was a brief window where I could get it on the computer--ah, blissful time--about a month or two.
Alas, those days are no more. So, NOW, I must subsist on merely reading each song as it comes through the Yes.Net computer lines, and WISH that I was hearing it.
I do this every day (M-F).
Sad, sad, sad.

(And whatever their in-betweens are, like the day I suspect he was interviewing U2, I totally missed.)

I understand. My point was that I loved, adored and lived for KROQ back in the day. Alas, that is no more. But, I still have great memories of what that station was and how it shaped my life. I don't feel any need to defend my residual feelings for KROQ because I know how that station changed me, and I am a loyal person, so I don't really give a flying fig what anybody else thinks. It is what it is.
The deal is, that if you were listening only to 94.9, we wouldn't really have much to discuss because you would be totally into a different station. I am sure that I probably listened to Halloran back when he was on 91X and I when I lived in South County where you can actually GET the San Diego stations.
In fact, I remember one year when Himself was under two years old and we went camping (oh yeah, that was the LAST time I camped. ICK) and we were down in San Onofre. 91X was a Godsend! It kicked ass all week. The problem was, when I got back to the People's Republic of Brea, no dice on the reception.
When we went back, years later, to stay for a week in a condo, TYVM, again 91X saved my ass. So, what I am saying, I guess, is that I am an Indie Station huuuar, and I will listen to whatever station is playing stuff that moves me. It's immaterial what the call numbers are as long as the message is going out, loud and clear.

Miche: Just curious, what celebrities have come in for the coup d'etats on 94.9? I guess the closest thing we have to that is when Jonesy has guests on that bring their own music, although I've noticed they don't play as much from guests as they used to. I remember when Tracy Ulman was on and she brought in her IPod and picked a number of songs that got played.
Kristee: KROQ sucks!!! Just kidding. Yeah, when I was younger and used to take trips with my family to San Diego, I kind of channel surfed looking for any songs that I recognized and stumbled upon 91x. I think one of the first songs I heard on there was Oasis - Live Forever. Any time since then that I travel on down to SD, I'll immediately switch over to 91x. I have noticed that their playlist has kind of wandered over to the same as KROQ plays, but c'est la vie. I still think they're just a bit cooler and less commercial than KROQ, and it is nice to hear My Town by Buck-O-Nine any time I'm in San Diego.

Halloran at KROQ
And 94.9 (San Diego) from 2002? to present.
So, obviously 1988 was KROQ's ONE good year, then?
I feel so lucky to have been listening to him SINCE WDET.

Halloran's music
Um, no dear. I'm a HALLORAN fan. It's different. I'd go to the ends of the earth to hear that man's music.a KROQ spy! wrote:Slowly but surely, Miche is becoming a KROQ fan!
EVEN KROQ.
And as to the other Spy's comments, the station is ONLY cool when Halloran is there. Once he leaves, so does the coolness.
I actually listened to Kevin and Bean for about two seconds this morning, when ALL other stations had commercials. They were grilling some poor actor/comedian guy, asking him some stupid/offensive questions. To a guy who's been married many years, they say: so are there lots of hot chicks in standup? He pauses, then (to his credit) responds as if these guys are complete morons (which they are): "I don't do that sort of thing these days." They respond with: "We don't care. We do." (chortle)
As if that wasn't putrid enough, they then ask him if he "ever feels like giving back his Lifetime Achievement award" (which I guess he's about to receive). Now, can there BE a more stupid question? The poor man was so gracious, and just said, I've been passed over for a lot of things. I think I'll keep this one, thanks. I would've hung up on those losers.
And I did, to find refuge in the wonder of the Mighty Morning Show.

Why KCRW is the best...Period
It's to complicated for the KROQ spy!!!!
...keeping you connected to KCRW and beyond...
I hope you had a nice and memorable Memorial Day last week. Being a meat eater myself, I always look forward to this time of year, in great part due to the fabulous BBQ options out there, some of which I know even vegetarians can enjoy. And certainly anyone can dig some groovy BBQ tunes. Here are some to consider:
Any discussion of BBQ-related music must begin with Barbecue Bob, the legendary bluesman from the ‘20s. His real name was Robert Hicks, but he got his nickname for being a singing cook at Tidwell’s Barbecue Place in Atlanta. His trademark song, “Barbecue Blues,” is a classic, but sadly Bob’s career was cut short - he died of pneumonia at the age of 29. BBQ, blues and jazz all have a long relationship, from Louis Armstrong’s “Struttin’ With Some Barbecue” (composed by his longtime pianist and second wife, Lil Hardin), to ZZ Top’s “Bar-B-Q,” to my favorite BBQ-themed song, Brother Jack McDuff’s mid-‘60s jam, “Hot Barbeque,” featuring a young George Benson on guitar. On a more contemporary note, other smokin’ bands include Pere Ubu (“I Hear They Smoke the Barbecue”), Luna (“Cindy Tastes of Barbecue”), Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper (“BBQ USA”), Pepe Deluxe (“Daddy’s Blazin’ BBQ”), and the food obsessed Japanese duo Cibo Matto (“BBQ”). And if you’re willing to stretch it, you could also include Sparks’ “Barbecutie” for good measure. So get your apron and some tongs and let’s get grillin’!!!
And while we’re out on the backyard patio, let’s raise our beers (or sodas, wine coolers or whatever you care to drink at BBQs) to KCRW DJ Gary Calamar, whose Sunday night show, “The Open Road,” has just been nominated for Best Radio Show for this year’s LA Weekly Music Awards. The winners will be announced on June 14. Mr. Calamar is on quite a roll, with the impending release of the new “Six Feet Under” compilation. As many of you may know, he and fellow KCRW DJ Thomas Golubic are the music supervisors of the Emmy award-winning HBO series, which began its final season this week. They both compiled and produced this second volume of music from the show, including new exclusive cuts from Jem, Interpol and the Arcade Fire. The record hits stores June 28. So three cheers for Gary!
EJL’S PICKS - Here’s what I’ve been listening to while putting another shrimp on the barbee:
SHOUT OUT LOUDS - Howl Howl Gaff Gaff (Capitol) Once again, Sweden provides the world with more sweet tunes. This quintet play a melodic brand of indie pop that, unlike a lot of the recent batch of alt rockers, is completely charming and devoid of attitude. You'll get no guff from this Gaff.
PAUL ANKA - ROCK SWINGS (Verve) Anka has been swinging the hits for almost 50 years, and here he gives a big-band, Sinatra-esque treatment to some pop and rock hits of the past decade or two. Some are goofy (Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit," the Cure's "Lovecats"), some totally work (Soundgarden's "Blackhole Sun," Oasis' "Wonderwall"), but all are cool and imminently listenable.
FAT ALBERT AND THE COSBY KIDS - THE ORIGINAL ANIMATED SERIES, VOL. 1 (Ventura Distribution) OK, this is actually a DVD collection, but it comes with a bonus CD that features 12 of the songs that Fat Albert's pals sang in their junkyard band. They all have good morals to them, like "don't ditch school" and "don't make fun of short people," sung in that innocent soul-pop sound that typifies the early '70s. I've been waiting for a collection of these fun songs for a long time! Hey, hey, hey!
That's all for this week. Feel free to email me with your comments, suggestions or favorite grilling tunes at LIBRARIAN@KCRW.COM.

Gooch, not only do they have a librarian at KCRW, but said librarian was also the music director on Catherine Hardwicke's new movie about surfing.
You should strike up an acquaintance with him...

KCRW
Yes, KCRW does have its shiite together much more than SOME stations we know. They have their current PLAYLIST right on their website, people don't have to go searching for it, and still missing songs.
They have podcasting.
They are just cool.

Podcasting is when the person on air plugs their personal Ipod in and does a show from what they have stored there...at least that's what I hear that it is....
As to Halloran's station, yeah, they might have their shit together, but they don't have a forum or a site devoted strictly to their music, djs or shows....

Podcasting
Actually, that's not exactly true. It's that you can download the RADIO SHOWS to your own iPod! So you can listen to them whenever is convenient. (ie, if Indie had podcasting, I could listen to the uncensored version of Jonesy's Jukebox whenever I darn want to!)gidgetgoestohell wrote:Podcasting is when the person on air plugs their personal Ipod in and does a show from what they have stored there...at least that's what I hear that it is....

And it's true, 94.9 doesn't have (from what I can tell) any sort of listener area. No forums, no Yahoo group, no MySpace hooha. No sure why that is. Oh, and they don't have podcasting yet either. (Some nonsense about licensing songs...)

By the way Annie...when I was driving home last night I thought about what you said about your "B" in the class that you were worried about. Congrats! I remember the satisfaction that came out of getting a grade I wasn't expecting AND the satisfaction of a job well done.

Podcasting explained
KCRW DOES HAVE PODCASTING. You can go there right now and podcast Morning Becomes Eclectic! (a great show, btw)
For example, if you really MUST listen to Dicky, but you also want to hear what Nic Harcourt is doing, podcasting is the way to go. That way you could listen to KCRW's morning show whenever you want.
Sadly, Indie does not have podcasting.
94.9 does not have podcasting.
KROQ does not have podcasting. Hell, they don't even have a decent website, MUCH LESS podcasting!
All clear now?
They explain it further here:
http://www.kcrw.org/podcast/
Well, holy jeez. I just realized that they have the same music licensing issues as everyone else. I stand corrected. They don't podcast MUSIC, ONLY TALK.
