Their "coolness" was questionable even when they were new and their thing was somewhat fresh, but now it's just extremely old and tired. Maybe it would work on Star 98.7 or KBig.
I mean geez, their skits are borderline racist.
My car got broken into and my radio has been stuck on Kroq, forcing me to listen to their morning show. it makes me want to rip out whats left of my stereo.
Some bright spots on Kroq still: Jed the Fish.

In my own defense...I started listening to KROQ when I was in eigth grade (circa 1977-78) so, I have a soft spot in my hard heart for KROQ....I appreciate everything that the station did when they were good and I refuse to bash them...
Let's not forget, KROQ did bring us Rodney Bingenheimer......

They were talking smack about their webmaster because he got trashed at the Acoustic Christmas and when he got to work Monday he put up a page that said 2003 Acoustic Christmas tickets were going on sale Thursday. So today is the KROQ Christmas party so they were doing an "intervention" to try to keep him from getting trashed at the party and acting like a dumbass. So he got mad and put up the "Kevin & Bean Are Gay!" page

I agree, in essence, but for a large number if years, KROQ was the ONLY game in town....they did it better than anyone else (until Indie came along) that I could get reception for and I am unappologetic for in my giving them the credit that I believe that they are due....

Kinda like Rick Dees... he was a DJ in the 60s and he was basically forced upon the music listeners as the times changed but the radio stations didnt. I mean having Rick Dees try to be some hiphop, rap DJ, connecting with the modern generation is just not something that was going to happen.
Seems the older folk tend to like Kevin and Bean, but is that really the demographic KROQ is trying to get nowadays? Because I don't think that 90% of the other programming is geared towards that.

Haha! Poorman! I went up to the station to find out a name of a song (I lived down the street from the studios) and I ended up babysitting his kid. Before I got there, everyone was feeding him milk to keep him quiet. By the time I got him he was so full he ended up throwing up on my "Gathering of the Tribes" shirt. I think that shirt still has that stain....biLzamo wrote:What station did Poorman go to? Must have been a good one!

I think Mr. Shovel put it best:
Nicely put, Mark.Kroq WAS a great station. Rodney is a legend and should get some respect from his own people, but he doesnt.
Saying that they were a great station is as useful to me today as saying gasoline used to cost 17 cents.
That was a long damn time ago.

My one cents
20 years from now, I'll be saying the same thing about Dickey Barret and Steve Jones. They'll still be cool, but the "freshness" is gone. In 20 years from now, who's to say I'll be liking the same stuff?
If Kevin & Bean are reaching out to the modern generation, more power to them. But I don't really like the example they set, seems they mostly just laugh at other people's misfortunes and problems and put them down.

To me...it is just ungratious not to acknowledge KROQ contribution to the scheme of things....Indie has obviously taken what worked about that station, and work it indeed did do for a great amount of time...but Indie has also discarded what doesn't work...which works perfectly for me....
Since I have repeatedly stated my appreciation of KROQ, I must also say that the one or two times I sent something to Kevin and Bean (my brother moved to AZ and I used to tape the show for him DAILY and mail them to him weekly. It's the one thing that he misses about Califffoooorrnniiiiiya, as he calls it).
Anyway, I sent them an email and said how I had listened to the station forever, and how Himself was now a listener, blah blah blah. I requested that they send my brother a K&B tee shirt, seeing as how they were both originally from AZ. They basically told me to go pound sand.
Sooooooo...the gyst of this is: Yeah, I have problems with the station and that show, but in the long run I will ALWAYS and FOREVER be grateful for the times that KROQ was a significent station and the roll in my life that they held for such a long time.

Yeah Gidge, i totally agree. Seems like people who used to work at KROQ when it was more cutting egde, now all work at Indie. KROQ was definitely a model to follow as far as how popular and influential a radio station can become. When KROQ was starting, the word "Alternative" actually meant alternative. It was something different than the mainstream, they were trailblazers. KROQ turned the word "Alternative" into the most mainstream type of genre you can imagine, and now KROQ-type stuff is regularly played on Top 40 stations. I mean you could say "KROQ" WAS the genre of music for much of LA.
