Honestly I think KROQ has no clue as to who or what Indie is. With the bashing Indie does on air towards KROQ, I'm suprised Kevin & Bean haven't started another war as they did with Rick Dees & Ryan Seacrest. Dickie honestly would be an easy mark. Thats why I think / know it isn't KROQ. That's all nothing more.

Okay, so I didn't really think the guest was a KROQ spy. Probably as Glenn alluded to, it was more likely a Korean spy.
BUT, I do think KROQ is quite aware of Indie and at least somewhat concerned about all the buzz and attention that it's been getting in the last year. I think for anyone in radio, it'd be impossible to be oblivious to the impact that Indie has had in the short time that it's been around. And it can't just be a coincidence that within the past few months KROQ has changed its format considerably to include bands like Louie XIV, Kaiser Chiefs, Bright Eyes, and the Bravery. Honestly, I think the only reason Kevin and Bean haven't started a war with Indie is that they're probably afraid that it would only make more of their listeners aware of Indie 103.
Now the reason they can afford to fuck with guys like Rick Dees and Ryan Seacret is cause they're cheesy-ass DJs who came from pop stations. KIIS and STAR 98.7 (where Ryan worked when they first started ragging on him) both play top 40s stuff, so there's no real threat of losing KROQ listners to these stations. Whereas if more KROQ listeners found out about Indie, they'd find a station featuring: the best songs of KROQ, without any of the shitty, mindless, corporate ones; new songs from emerging artists that KROQ hasn't even heard of yet; classic songs from legendary bands at all hours of the day, not just the overplayed singles during an hour at lunchtime; superior programming; and the best God damn DJs in the universe.
Peep that, bitches.

or they could be watching subteranean which is a good 2-3 months ahead of Indie or if they really wanted to get ahead they could read "Mojo" or make http://www.pitchforkmedia.com their home page.

Or they could travel around the country and visit small clubs, watch bands get their start practicing in garages, and attend various Battle of the Bands events in the nation. Of course, they could just tune their radio dial a couple notches and listen for what bands Indie is playing then go out and purchase those CDs. I guess they go for convenience.

Yeah, that was one of the artists that I just cringed when I first heard on KROQ. The're even promoting Bright Eyes' upcoming gigs in their calendar section now. What's worse, one of the first times they played them, DJ John Michaels started making fun of Conor Oberst afterwards, who just happens to be on the thin side. "Wow, Conor's really been packing the weight on lately. He's up to a whole 98 lbs. But don't worry, he hopes to be back to his usual fighting weight of 67 lbs. soon."
